Settlement in the village has been traced back well over 300 years, during which times the sights, sounds and people of Gearrannan encapsulated traditional island lifestyle. In 1974 the last remaining occupants moved from the blackhouses to modern houses and the Village entirely degenerated into ghostly ruins.
More than a decade later Urras nan Gearrannan was formed in order to restore the village and to breathe life back into what was once a vibrant community.
The restored Blackhouse Village caters for a wide variety of visitors. Groups and individuals have the opportunity to experience traditional rural activities, learn about the rich history of the area, work, relax and socialise in a unique atmosphere.
