From Gearrannan Blackhouse Village you have the choice of two coastal walks.

The route from Gearrannan to Dalbeg has way-markers, the distance is approximately 6 Kilometres / 4 miles, and the walk can take up to 3 hours. A mile or so beyond Dalbeg is a beautifully restored water-mill, the “Norse Mill and Kiln” at Shawbost.

Between Gearrannan and Dalbeg is the village of Dalmore. The beaches at Dalmore and Dalbeg are two of the most beautiful in the Island. Dalbeg is the more sheltered of the two, while Dalmore is very popular with surfers and is frequented by surfing enthusiasts from all over the world. The self-catering accommodation at Gearrannan Blackhouse Village is an ideal base for surfers.

Guide leaflets for the Dalmore - Dalbeg walk are available at the Village.

The walk to the Laimishader lighthouse which is on a headland at the mouth of Loch Carloway is not marked. However, it is equally as enjoyable as the Dalmore - Dalbeg walk. Head south from Gearrannan, following the rugged coastline – at a safe distance from the cliffs. The distance to the lighthouse is approximately 1.5 miles.

From the higher points along this route you are able to see the islands of Cràgam, Campaigh, an t-Seana Bheinn and Beireasaigh that lie at the mouth of Loch Roag. To the south is the island of Little Bernera with its beautiful white sands.

On a clear day, the Flannan Isles are visible on the horizon to the south west. These islands were made famous in 1900 by the disappearance of three lighthouse keepers.

Both walks provides excellent opportunities for spotting wildlife – particularly sea-birds. Fulmars and Cormorants are common, and gannets can often be seen diving for fish off-shore. Whales and dolphins can sometimes be spotted – and onshore, you may be in luck and see an otter.

Dun-Carloway Broch, an Iron Age dwelling, is within walking distance of Gearrannan, and the famous pre-historic Callanish Standing Stones are only six miles away.
